Economic benefits
The extinction of Grizzly Bears would affect the economy in many ways. British Colombia generates higher amounts of revenue from bear watching than hunting. The $6.1 million revenue generated from ecotourism is all due to the presence of bears. In the future the predictions are that $75 million will come from the grizzly viewing industry, while $40 million will come from hunting. If Grizzlies were to go extinct then places in Canada where these bears still exist will not get this high revenue. The government makes $500,000 a year from licenses, tags, and royalties associated with the grizzly bear sport hunt. The loss of the sport hunt will require a shirt on the hunt because of the loss of the main game.
Benefits on Ecosystems
If Grizzly Bears go extinct ecosystems would be affected significantly. First of all, Grizzly Bears eat herbivores which eat plants; meaning that if the bears die there would be no one to control the number of herbivore species. For example, if a moose has an offspring and there is no animal to prey on them for food their population would increase, therefore many plants would be eaten. If many plants get eaten there will be a considerable decrease of plant species and fresh oxygen produced by these plants during photosynthesis. In addition, Grizzlies leave food for small scavengers to eat and without them their numbers would also decrease. For example, raccoons are scavengers and eat food left behind by other animals and if there is no animal to do that their numbers would also decrease. If the population of raccoons decreases then the waste left by other animals increases because raccoons will generally eat the leftovers. Furthermore, Grizzly Bears dig a lot of holes which is good for plants since they are altering the soil. For example, when you are sick you cannot breathe properly but when you are feeling good it feels better, likewise when you dig a hole the air get’s to the bottom of the plant easily. If Grizzles were to go instinct in the wild then there would not be a lot of holes in the ground for plants to thrive on. In conclusion, if Grizzly Bears go instinct in the ecosystems there would be a outburst of herbivores, the populations of scavengers will decrease, and there would not be as many holes in the ground for plants to flourish on.
